How to boost FPS in Warzone: settings, DLSS/FSR and Windows

01 Warzone and its engine: why it's demanding
Call of Duty Warzone runs on IW Engine (a proprietary Infinity Ward engine) and is one of the most demanding battle royale games in terms of VRAM and CPU. The large map, high-quality assets and number of simultaneous players make system load high even on modern hardware. Warzone is also sensitive to RAM bandwidth and storage: installing it on an SSD notably reduces asset-loading hitches.
02 DLSS and FSR: the most important tool in Warzone
Warzone supports DLSS (NVIDIA RTX) and FSR (AMD and compatible GPUs). In DLSS Quality or DLSS Balanced mode on an RTX GPU, you get an image close to native resolution with a real FPS increase. FSR 2.0 and 3.0 are supported in modern versions of Warzone and work on non-RTX GPUs. These are the most effective image scalers available in Warzone — enable them before touching any other setting if you're looking for more FPS with good image quality. Performance modes give more FPS but with more noticeable quality loss.
03 VRAM: the most common bottleneck in Warzone
Warzone is notoriously VRAM-hungry. With textures at Normal or High, 4 GB of VRAM may not be enough, causing micro-stutters because the game moves textures between VRAM and main RAM. The game shows your available vs used VRAM in the video menu. If you're near the limit, drop texture quality one level. With 6 GB VRAM or more, High textures are fine. With 4 GB, Normal is usually more stable than High. With 8 GB or more, High textures shouldn't be a problem.
04 Shadows: the highest-FPS-cost setting
In Warzone, shadow quality has a high FPS impact. Drop Sun Shadow Quality to Low or Medium — it's the most expensive shadow setting. Particle shadows and terrain shadow effects also have weight: set them to Low. Shadow Cache Quality at High can cause stutter in scenes with many dynamic objects — if you see hitches in dense combat areas, drop it to Normal.
05 Display mode: exclusive fullscreen is best
Warzone in exclusive fullscreen mode gives the lowest input lag and allows G-Sync/FreeSync to work correctly in most configurations. Borderless windowed is convenient for switching screens but adds latency. If you use G-Sync and want VRR in borderless mode, make sure to enable G-Sync for windowed mode in the NVIDIA panel, but exclusive fullscreen remains the lowest-latency option.
06 Effects and post-processing
Depth of Field is purely cosmetic and has a non-trivial GPU cost — disable it. World and Weapon Motion Blur add movement blurring that can make it harder to see enemies moving fast and has GPU cost — disable both. Film Grain is decorative, disable it. Antialiasing priority: SMAA T2X gives a clean image with moderate cost; DLSS/FSR handle AA when they're active.
07 Tessellation, field quality and world objects
Tessellation controls additional terrain geometry — Near is sufficient for most situations and Extended or All has a real GPU cost. Particle Quality and Lighting Quality dropped to Low give visible performance gains especially in combat with many players — which is exactly when FPS matters most. Level of Detail Resolution Quality can stay at Normal without significant visual impact.
08 Frame rate cap: use it
Warzone has an FPS limiter in video options. Capping FPS stabilizes frame times and reduces GPU heat. A value of 2x your refresh rate is reasonable without VRR; directly at your refresh rate with VRR active. Without a cap, Warzone can overload the GPU in menus (where the game renders thousands of unnecessary FPS), which can cause temperature problems and throttling when a match starts.
09 GPU drivers and updates
Warzone has documented history of game updates temporarily breaking performance until NVIDIA or AMD release optimized drivers. If performance suddenly dropped without you changing anything, check if there's a new GPU driver — or if there's a specific driver reported as good for Warzone on community forums. At the same time, sometimes a new driver is the problem: both NVIDIA and AMD panels let you roll back to the previous driver.
10 Windows and the OS
Warzone benefits from a clean background: close Battle.net or the Call of Duty launcher down to only what's needed for the game (the launcher needs to be open to play, but close everything else). Discord and GeForce Experience overlays can cause stutter in Warzone — disable the ones you don't need. Power plan at Best Performance or High Performance (Settings › System › Power). On laptops, always play plugged in.
11 How Neon helps on the Windows side
