How to make your PC faster for gaming (honestly)

No magic tricks, no invented numbers. These are the real steps a tech would give you: most are free, safe and reversible. The order runs from easiest to highest impact.
Step by step
01 Close background apps and overlays
Browsers, chat apps and overlays (Discord, capture tools, store panels) eat CPU, GPU and RAM while you play. Close what you don't need before launching the game.
02 Set the Windows power plan to High performance
On laptops or power-saving setups, the balanced plan can throttle clocks. Use High performance while gaming, or the game's own on-demand boost.
03 Update your GPU driver
Newer drivers often ship per-game fixes and optimizations. Get them from the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel site.
04 Enable the XMP/EXPO memory profile in BIOS
Without XMP/EXPO your RAM runs below its rated speed. Turning it on is often the single biggest real win in a PC — and it's frequently off by default.
05 Turn on Resizable BAR if your system supports it
Resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory on AMD) lets the CPU access all of the GPU's memory at once. It helps in supported games and is enabled in the BIOS.
06 Keep ~10-15% free space on your SSD
A nearly full SSD slows down and lengthens load times. Leave some free headroom on the drive where your games are installed.
07 Enable Game Mode and trim startup apps
Windows Game Mode prioritizes the active game. Disable startup apps you don't use to free resources from boot.
08 Cap Windows Update and OneDrive while playing
Background downloads and syncs steal bandwidth and disk. Pause them or schedule them outside your play hours.
