Boost FPS in CS2: video settings and launch options

CS2 on Source 2 is significantly more demanding than CS:GO. Shadows Low/Very Low, particles Low, but keep model detail High for hitboxes. `-fullscreen` helps input lag; `-nojoy` and `-threads` are placebo. Shader stutter only hits first sessions and clears on its own.
Step by step
01 CS2 and the engine: context first
Counter-Strike 2 uses Source 2 and renders exclusively in DirectX 11 on Windows — unlike the original CS:GO which also supported OpenGL and lighter modes. The engine is considerably more demanding than CS:GO, especially on GPU and shader loading. The first big difference from CS:GO is that graphics options that previously didn't matter now carry weight. Understanding what stresses the engine helps you choose where to cut.
02 Video settings: the options that matter most
In CS2's video settings menu, the biggest FPS costs are: shadow quality (drop to Low or Very Low), particle quality (Low), model detail level (High is the minimum for correct hitboxes — don't go below High), and shader quality (Low gives the biggest gain without compromising gameplay). Reflections and ambient occlusion at Low or disabled remove GPU load with minimal visual impact in combat.
03 Launch options: which ones are legitimate
There are many launch option packs circulating on forums — most are placebo or outright harmful. The ones with real, documented effect in CS2: `-fullscreen` (forces exclusive fullscreen, reduces input lag on some systems), `-novid` (skips the intro video, doesn't change performance but saves time), `-console` (opens the console on startup). What doesn't work or doesn't apply in CS2 as it did in CS:GO: `-nojoy` (joysticks aren't loaded by default in CS2 anymore), `-threads X` (CS2 manages its own threads), `+fps_max` values from launch options (use the in-game console instead). Always verify launch options against current Valve documentation.
04 fps_max: configure it correctly
CS2 has the `fps_max` command available in the console (open with the ~ key or at startup with `-console`). Capping FPS to a stable value — recommended: a few frames above your refresh rate without VRR, or directly at your refresh rate with VRR active — reduces GPU saturation during high-load moments and gives more even frame times. Many CS players leave `fps_max 0` (uncapped) because they think more FPS is always better: sometimes framerate variance is worse than a higher average.
05 Shader pre-warming: the first-session stutter
CS2 compiles shaders while you play, the first time it sees a new effect. This causes noticeable short hitches in the first sessions after installing or updating the game. There's no visible manual pre-compilation option like in some other games, but the stutter naturally disappears after a few sessions once the shaders are cached. If you clear the driver shader cache (in the NVIDIA or AMD panel), this restarts the process — only do this if you genuinely need to fix persistent stutter, not routinely.
06 Windowed, borderless and fullscreen
CS2 performs best in exclusive fullscreen (`-fullscreen`) for minimum input lag, especially if your monitor doesn't have VRR. Borderless windowed makes alt-tabbing easier but adds one frame of latency compared to exclusive fullscreen on most systems. If you use G-Sync or FreeSync and want VRR active, borderless or windowed mode may need special configuration in the NVIDIA/AMD panel. For competitive gaming where input lag matters, exclusive fullscreen usually wins.
07 GPU and drivers: keep them current
CS2 has performance that improves with updated drivers, especially after major game updates. NVIDIA and AMD periodically release optimizations specific to CS2. Update from the official site before blaming the game for low performance. If performance suddenly dropped after a driver update, both the NVIDIA and AMD panels let you roll back to the previous driver. Don't install drivers from unofficial sources.
08 Resolution: stretched or native?
The historical practice of using stretched resolutions in CS:GO (like 1280x960 or 1024x768 stretched) to make player models wider is still possible in CS2 via monitor or driver scaling. The real impact: more FPS because fewer pixels are rendered, and wider characters some players prefer for aiming. The cost: a distorted image and less detail sharpness. It's a legitimate personal preference, but don't expect magical performance gains — the FPS difference between 1024x768 and 1920x1080 in CS2 is usually significant on low-end GPUs.
09 Windows and OS background load
CS2 on Source 2 uses more RAM and CPU than its predecessor. Having the browser open with many tabs, Discord with video streaming, or capture software running in parallel can noticeably impact frame times. Close what you don't need. The GeForce Experience overlay can cause stutter on the first frame when activated — disable it if you don't use it. The power plan at Best Performance or High Performance helps especially on laptops and systems with active power-saving modes.
10 What is placebo in CS2
Setting the game process priority to Realtime can cause problems — Windows becomes less able to interrupt it when it needs CPU time for other critical tasks. Network 'tweaks' like `cl_interp` at extreme values don't improve the physical connection. Disabling Windows 'fullscreen optimization' on the game .exe has variable effects — sometimes it helps a little, sometimes it makes things worse. Test on your specific system before making it permanent.
11 How Neon helps on the Windows side
