How to free up RAM on Windows (without the snake oil)

Honest spoiler: most “RAM boosters” don't speed up anything. Here's what actually matters, what genuinely helps, and when the problem is simply that you need more memory. No invented numbers.

01 Understand what RAM actually is
RAM is the working memory where Windows keeps what you're using right now. It's fast and limited. When it fills up, Windows moves the least-used data to disk (paging) — and that's when you actually feel the slowdown.
02 “Free RAM” is not the goal
Windows uses free RAM as a cache to open things faster. A bar at 80% isn't a problem — it's efficiency. Empty RAM is wasted RAM. The real symptom is paging under pressure, not a high number on a gauge.
03 Close heavy apps and tabs
Browsers with many tabs, editors and games are the biggest consumers. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), sort by Memory and close what you're not using. This frees real RAM — no tricks involved.
04 Trim your startup programs
Many apps launch with Windows and sit in memory all day. In Task Manager → Startup, disable what you don't need at boot. It lowers RAM use from the very first minute.
05 Restart now and then
Some programs leak memory: they slowly accumulate RAM over time. A clean restart resets everything to zero. It's not magic — it's basic system hygiene.
06 Let Windows manage the page file
The page file is the safety valve when RAM fills up. Leave it on automatic: disabling it or forcing a fixed size usually causes more problems than it solves.
07 If pressure is constant, add physical RAM
If your PC pages often during normal use, no app can fix it — you simply need more RAM. Adding a module (ideally dual channel and compatible with your board) is the only real, lasting fix.
08 Be wary of automatic “RAM cleaners”
Apps that “free RAM” every few seconds usually force-empty Windows' useful cache, and then everything reloads slower. The number on the bar drops, but your PC doesn't run any faster.
Where Neon helps

- It only frees standby and working-set RAM when it MEASURES real memory pressure. If there's no pressure, it does nothing — because emptying the cache for no reason slows you down.
- It shows you which apps and processes use the most memory, so you can close what actually weighs instead of guessing.
- It never invents a number. You won't see a made-up “freed 2 GB” — you'll see what changed and why, or nothing if it wasn't needed.
- If your real problem is a lack of physical RAM, it tells you plainly. No software can create memory you don't have, and Neon won't pretend otherwise.
To be transparent: freeing the working set isn't free. Whatever leaves the cache gets re-read from disk when needed, so it only makes sense under real pressure — which is exactly when Neon does it.
