Apex Legends FPS boost: launch options and real settings

Add +fps_max 0 in launch options to uncap FPS. Drop Model Detail to Low — the highest-impact setting. Use FSR Quality for upscaling. Shadows and Effects at Low for stable fights. Neon optimizes the Windows side only — it does not inject into or touch Apex files.

01 Source Engine in Apex: why fights drop FPS
Apex Legends runs on a modified version of Source Engine, the same engine behind CS2 and TF2, with many proprietary Respawn extensions. The engine has single-threaded code paths in critical areas, meaning FPS during fights depends heavily on how much work the CPU main thread can do per cycle. Ability effects, many visible players, particles and physics are all processed on this thread. Reducing settings that feed those loads has a real, tangible impact.
02 +fps_max and the real launch options
The most important launch option for Apex is +fps_max 0 to remove the game's default 144 FPS cap, or +fps_max [number] to set a specific cap. Add it in Steam: right-click Apex Legends › Properties › Launch Options. -novid is also valid to skip the intro video. Avoid options circulating on forums without official documentation like -forcenovsync or -nojoy — many are placebo or have no effect on modern game builds.
03 Adaptive Resolution and FSR: Apex's upscaling
Apex has a feature called Adaptive Resolution (also labeled Adaptive Supersampling) in the Video settings. When enabled, it lowers the internal render resolution to maintain a target FPS. There is also AMD FSR 1.0 support, which you enable in that same setting by selecting FSR quality presets. FSR Quality gives an image close to native with a real FPS boost. FSR Performance gives more FPS but with more noticeable sharpness loss. At 1080p, FSR Quality or Balanced is the most reasonable choice.
04 Model Detail: the highest-impact setting for GPU and CPU
Model Detail controls the polygon complexity of characters and objects in the scene. At Low, character models have fewer polygons, reducing both GPU load (rasterization) and CPU work for processing animations and collisions. In a battle royale where you can have 60 players visible late game, this compounds. Dropping it from High to Low is one of the highest-return moves in Apex.
05 Texture Streaming Budget: VRAM under control
The texture streaming budget controls how much VRAM Apex allocates for textures. At None or Very Low, the game uses lower-resolution textures, freeing VRAM. If you have 4 GB or less VRAM and see stutters when looking at new parts of the map, lowering this setting can eliminate them. With 8 GB or more VRAM, you can leave it at Medium or High without noticeable VRAM impact.
06 Shadows and effects: the other expensive settings
Shadows in Apex have a clear GPU impact. Dropping shadow quality to Low or disabling them reduces dynamic lighting calculation work. Sun Shadow Coverage and Sun Shadow Detail are the most expensive. Effects Detail at Low reduces ability particles, explosions and muzzle flash — relevant because large team fights can cause FPS drops specifically from particle accumulation.
07 Display mode and V-Sync
Apex should run in exclusive fullscreen mode (not Windowed Fullscreen) for lowest input lag. Windowed Fullscreen adds latency because it goes through the Windows compositor. Disable V-Sync in Apex settings — it adds input lag. If you have a G-Sync or FreeSync monitor and want VRR, use VRR with V-Sync off in the game and the driver handling synchronization.
08 Field of view (FOV) and its impact
A higher FOV renders more pixels at the edges of the screen, which has a real GPU cost. Dropping FOV from 110 to 90-95 can give a few extra FPS on GPU-limited setups. At lower resolutions the impact is smaller. It is a personal choice balancing visual comfort vs performance — there is no universal answer.
09 Ambient Occlusion and Volumetric Lighting
Ambient Occlusion adds contact shadows where objects meet, and has a non-trivial GPU cost — you can drop it to Disabled. Volumetric Lighting (fog and light rays) also has weight — disable it if you need FPS. Neither affects tactical screen readability in Apex.
10 Windows: power plan and background processes
Apex is very sensitive to CPU clock variation because its main thread processes in short, intense bursts. The Best Performance power plan in Windows ensures the CPU does not drop frequency between those bursts. On laptops, always play plugged in — Apex on battery can see much lower FPS (Windows throttles the CPU to save power). Close Chrome, video players and any other application actively using CPU or disk during play.
11 How Neon helps on the Windows side
