SSD maintenance: keep your PC fast and healthy

No magic tricks, no invented numbers. A modern SSD needs almost no maintenance: these are the few real habits that keep it fast and extend its life. Most are free and safe.
Step by step
01 Keep ~10-15% of the drive free
An SSD needs free cells to write quickly and spread wear evenly. When it fills up, write performance and load times get worse. Keep roughly 10-15% free, especially on the system drive.
02 Confirm TRIM is enabled
TRIM tells the SSD which blocks are no longer in use so it can clean them ahead of time. On Windows 10/11 it's on by default. To check, open a command prompt and run fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify — a result of 0 means TRIM is active.
03 Don't defragment an SSD
Defragmentation makes sense on mechanical drives, not SSDs: it just creates needless writes and wear without improving speed. Windows already knows this and sends TRIM commands via the scheduled optimizer instead. Leave that task as it is.
04 Keep the SSD firmware updated
Manufacturers ship firmware that fixes bugs and improves stability. Use the official vendor tool (Samsung Magician, Crucial Storage Executive, WD Dashboard, etc.) and back up your data before updating, just in case.
05 Monitor health with SMART
SSDs report their condition through SMART. A free tool like CrystalDiskInfo shows temperature, power-on hours and wear indicators. Check it occasionally; the TBW (terabytes written) figure drops very slowly under normal use.
06 Keep Windows and storage drivers current
Windows updates and the storage controller driver (AHCI/NVMe) bring stability and compatibility fixes. They don't promise more speed, but they prevent known bugs and issues.
07 Consider over-provisioning if you'll fill it up
If you plan to run the drive nearly full, you can leave a percentage unpartitioned (over-provisioning) so the SSD keeps spare cells. It is optional — the free-space headroom from the first step already plays a similar role.
08 Back up: an SSD isn't eternal
No drive is foolproof. SSDs usually warn you through wear indicators, but they can also fail suddenly. Keep copies of important files on another drive or in the cloud. Maintenance extends lifespan; it doesn't guarantee it.
