How to fix FPS drops and stutter

Diagnose first — drops (low steady FPS) and stutter (hitches on good average) are different problems with different fixes. Check thermal throttling, background load, and the GPU driver before anything else; most real-world cases fall into those three causes. The steps below run in impact order, and all are free and reversible.
Step by step
01 Tell FPS drops apart from stutter
An FPS drop is a low but steady framerate (it dips in heavy scenes). Stutter is short hitches even when the average framerate is fine. They aren't fixed the same way — use the game's counter or an overlay to see which one you have before changing anything.
02 Check for thermal throttling
If the CPU or GPU run too hot, they lower their clocks to protect themselves and FPS sags over time. Watch temperatures while you play: if they hit the limit, clear out dust, improve airflow or review the fan curves.
03 Clear background load
Browsers, chat apps, overlays, an antivirus mid-scan and cloud syncs eat CPU, disk and RAM and cause micro-hitches. Close what you don't need and pause downloads before playing.
04 Update (or roll back) the GPU driver
An old driver — or a brand-new one with a bug — can cause stutter. Update from the official NVIDIA, AMD or Intel site. If the hitches started right after an update, try the previous stable version.
05 Tune the power plan
On laptops or power-saving setups, the balanced plan can lower clocks and cause drops. Use High performance (or the game's on-demand boost) while playing, and keep a laptop plugged into the wall.
06 Tame shader-compilation stutter
Many games compile shaders the first time you see an effect, which causes hitches in early sessions. Let the precompile step finish if the game offers one, and clear the driver's shader cache if it got corrupted after an update.
07 Rule out a storage bottleneck
If the game lives on a mechanical drive or a nearly full SSD, hitches while streaming textures are common. Keep ~10-15% free space and, if you can, install the game on an SSD.
08 Step down the settings that spike
Textures that exceed your VRAM, shadows or ray tracing can trigger drops and stutter. Lower the heavy settings one notch and try a steady FPS cap — a locked 60 often feels better than 90 with hitches.
