01 Why PoE2 is different: CPU-bound endgame, not GPU-bound

Path of Exile 2 works differently, especially in endgame. 02 Particle quality: the highest-impact setting in endgame
Particle Quality in Path of Exile 2 controls how detailed and numerous the visual effects from skills, explosions, projectiles and ground effects are. In endgame, these effects multiply — a build that fires thousands of projectiles or activates multiple area effects simultaneously can generate extreme particle load. Reducing particle quality from High to Medium or Low is the highest-impact CPU-side adjustment available directly in the game's UI. Players report clear improvements in FPS stability during the most action-dense moments. The overall game image changes little — lower-quality effects are still readable for gameplay purposes.
03 Engine multithreading: the toggle that may exist in the config file
Path of Exile 2, like PoE1, has multithreading options that allow the engine to distribute CPU workload across multiple cores. 04 DX12 vs. other render modes: when it helps and when it does not
Path of Exile 2 offers multiple render backends. DX12 can reduce CPU overhead in GPU command management on modern multi-core processors, because it distributes work submission across threads more efficiently than DX11. Players report that DX12 improves average FPS on some systems — particularly on CPUs with 8 or more cores — but it can also introduce more stutter at the start of a session while the DX12 pipeline warms up its shader cache. On older CPUs or systems with less RAM, DX12 may perform worse than DX11. 05 System level: XMP/EXPO and background load
PoE2 relies on the CPU being able to process large volumes of game data quickly. RAM speed and latency affect how much the CPU can process per frame. If XMP or EXPO is not enabled in your BIOS, your RAM runs at its base speed — often 2133 MHz or 2400 MHz instead of the 3200–6000 MHz most modern memory modules support. Enabling XMP/EXPO is free and can improve minimum frame rates and reduce hitches during load spikes. Additionally, reducing background load is especially important in a CPU-bound game: active screen recorders, browsers with many tabs and background updaters compete directly with the work PoE2 needs to do.
06 Upscaling in a CPU-bound game: what DLSS/FSR can and cannot do
DLSS and FSR raise FPS by rendering at a lower resolution and reconstructing the image at native resolution — this relieves GPU load. In a game where the GPU already has headroom because the CPU is the bottleneck, upscaling has limited effect. If your GPU is at 50% usage because the CPU cannot deliver work to it faster, rendering at a lower resolution will not break the bottleneck. Upscaling does help in situations where the GPU is the limiting factor — for example, in early campaign areas or on weaker GPU configurations. In dense endgame with a saturated CPU, the CPU-side adjustments (particles, multithreading, DX12) are what move the needle.
07 Early access era: GGG patches change performance characteristics

GGG ships regular updates that can change performance behavior, add new configuration options, or modify how the engine handles particle load. 08 Temperature and power plan
A CPU that is thermal throttling in a CPU-bound game is especially costly — clock speed drops directly affect particle simulation throughput and game logic. On laptops, playing while plugged in and with the platform performance profile set to high is essential to avoid sacrificing turbo clocks.

- Low GPU usage in PoE2 endgame is usually the correct diagnosis rather than a problem. The game's endgame — dense packs, heavy particle effects from skill interactions, status ailments and ground effects — places very high load on the CPU for physics, particle simulation and game logic. If your CPU is running at or near its limit, the GPU is starved of work and sits idle. This is a CPU bottleneck, not a GPU problem. Confirming this with the in-game overlay (which shows both CPU and GPU frame time) tells you whether a GPU upgrade would help or not. In most endgame scenarios, it would not.
- Does DX12 always help in Path of Exile 2?
- No. Players report that DX12 mode can reduce CPU overhead on modern processors with many cores, because DX12 allows the engine to spread GPU command submission across cores more efficiently than DX11. However, DX12 also introduces its own shader compilation overhead and can stutter more than DX11 on older CPUs or on systems with less RAM.
