Boost FPS in Fortnite: settings that actually work

Switch to Performance Mode (DX11 Performance) first — the single biggest gain on low/mid hardware. Outside it, DX11 is more stable than DX12; DLSS/FSR Quality are effective. Neon optimizes the Windows side only — it does not touch Fortnite files.
Step by step
01 Performance Mode: the biggest single change you can make
Fortnite has a rendering mode called 'Performance' (also known as Performance Mode or DX11 Performance) in Settings › Video › Rendering Mode. Unlike standard DirectX 12 or DirectX 11, Performance Mode radically simplifies the render pipeline: fewer effects, simplified materials, no complex ambient occlusion. On low- and mid-range hardware, the difference can be huge. The cost is visual — the game looks more basic. For competitive play where framerate matters more than aesthetics, it's the first thing to try.
02 DirectX 12 vs DirectX 11: which to choose
Outside Performance Mode, you choose between DX12 and DX11. DirectX 12 can be more efficient on modern hardware with current drivers, but it can also introduce stutter on shader loading if it's your first time in an area. DX11 is generally more stable and predictable, though with a slightly lower ceiling. If you notice hitches entering new zones on DX12, try DX11 — many competitive players prefer it for its consistency.
03 Shadow quality: the most expensive setting in Fortnite
Shadow quality is historically the most FPS-hungry setting in Fortnite. Dropping it from Medium to Low or Off has a clear impact on low- and mid-range GPUs. Shadows off makes players blend in slightly more with the background in some situations, but it also removes tree and foliage shadows that can make enemies harder to spot — some competitive players disable them specifically for this reason.
04 Effects: drop to medium or low
Effects quality controls explosions, particles, light flares and ability effects. At Low, explosions look simpler but the FPS impact can be noticeable during heavy action — which is exactly when you need stable framerate most. Medium is a good balance. Epic or Ultra effects can cut framerate during large multi-player fights.
05 View distance and foliage quality
View distance affects how many objects are rendered far away. Dropping it from Epic to Medium can help on CPU-limited setups — Fortnite has a large world and loading distant objects stresses the main thread. Foliage quality controls vegetation density; at Low there's less grass and bushes, which can actually improve enemy visibility in open areas on top of raising FPS.
06 3D Resolution and antialiasing
3D Resolution in Fortnite is equivalent to render scale: it lets you render the game at less than 100% of your monitor's pixels. Dropping to 75% or 80% can give significant FPS gains with moderate sharpness loss — much better visually than playing at a lower monitor resolution. For antialiasing, FXAA is the lightest option; TAA gives a better image but at more cost. SMAA is a reasonable middle ground.
07 Frame rate cap: use the one Fortnite has
Fortnite has its own FPS limiter in Video Settings. Set it to double your monitor refresh rate, or directly to your refresh rate if you use G-Sync/FreeSync. A stable, capped FPS reduces heat, fan noise, and gives more even frame times. Without a cap, the GPU works at maximum all the time and can cause micro-stutters when load suddenly spikes.
08 Drivers and NVIDIA DLSS / AMD FSR in Fortnite
Fortnite supports DLSS (NVIDIA RTX) and FSR (AMD and others). In DLSS Quality mode, you get images close to native resolution with more FPS. FSR works on almost any GPU and at Quality mode is a good option if you want more FPS without going to Performance Mode. Update GPU drivers before trying these options — DLSS in particular improves with newer driver versions.
09 Windows: background and overlays
Fortnite's Easy Anti-Cheat needs resources to run, so OS overhead matters more than in games without EAC. Close the browser, download clients and capture applications before playing. Disable the GeForce Experience overlay if you're not using it (it costs FPS in some configurations). The Discord overlay can cause hitches when activated — consider turning it off during competitive sessions.
10 Power plan and what isn't placebo
Fortnite runs well on modern CPUs, but the power plan still matters on laptops and setups with active power-saving modes. Set Windows to Best Performance (Settings › System › Power) and play plugged in on laptops. What does NOT help in Fortnite: setting process priority to High (Windows already does this for the active foreground), cleaning the registry, or using third-party 'optimizers' that touch system settings without explaining what they do.
11 How Neon helps on the Windows side
