Does switching to Ethernet actually improve latency?
01 What actually matters: stability, not speed
For gaming, your bandwidth is almost never the problem — a game uses very little. What you feel is latency and, above all, its variation (jitter). Ethernet wins exactly there: it delivers lower and far steadier latency.
02 Why Ethernet usually wins
A cable doesn't compete with neighbours, microwaves or walls. Less packet loss and less jitter mean fewer ping spikes mid-match. If you can wire it, it's the most consistent option — and the difference shows most in competitive games.
03 When Wi-Fi is enough

05 Test your own connection
Don't guess — measure. Run a sustained ping to a stable server while you play and watch whether the number jumps. On Windows, 'ping -t' to a reliable IP shows the variation. A low but erratic ping causes more trouble than a slightly higher steady one.
06 Powerline and adapters, with realistic expectations
If you can't run a cable, a Powerline adapter or a USB-Ethernet dongle can help, but the result depends on your electrical wiring. Test it and compare against your Wi-Fi before assuming it's better.
