The Windows 11 gaming settings that actually matter

Windows 11 has plenty of “gaming” toggles, but not all of them do what they claim. Here we separate what actually changes your experience from pure placebo, with the exact path to find each setting. Everything is free, safe and reversible.
Step by step
01 Turn on Game Mode
[Depends on your PC]
Settings › Gaming › Game Mode. It helps Windows avoid interrupting your session with background work (updates, driver restarts). It won't raise FPS on its own, but it keeps frame times steadier. Leave it on.
02 Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling
[Depends on your PC]
Settings › Display › Graphics › Change default graphics settings. It moves some GPU scheduling onto the GPU's own processor. On some systems it shaves a little latency; on others it does nothing or hurts. Test your game with it on and off before committing.
03 Variable refresh rate (VRR)
[Real win]
Settings › Display › Graphics › Variable refresh rate. This is the real, visible win of the bunch: it syncs the monitor to your GPU (G-Sync/FreeSync) and removes tearing without V-Sync's latency cost. Needs a compatible monitor and a proper DisplayPort/HDMI connection.
04 Auto HDR

Settings › Display › HDR. Auto HDR adds dynamic range to SDR games. It's purely visual — it doesn't help performance (it can cost a little GPU). Worth it only if you have a genuinely good HDR monitor; on cheap HDR panels it often looks worse.
05 Power mode: Best performance

Settings › System › Power › Power mode. On laptops or power-saving setups, balanced can throttle clocks. Set Best performance while gaming (plugged in). On a desktop already running flat out, the effect is minimal.
06 Per-app graphics preference

Settings › Display › Graphics. On laptops with integrated + dedicated GPUs, assign your game to the High performance GPU. If a game is accidentally running on the integrated chip, this is the single biggest win available. On a single-GPU desktop it does nothing.
07 Disable overlays you don't use

Game Bar (Win+G), Discord, GeForce/Adrenalin, Steam and capture overlays. Each overlay hooks your game and can cause stutter or capture issues. Keep only the one you actually use and turn the rest off.
08 What does NOT move the needle
[Placebo]
Disabling Windows animations, RAM “cleaners,” registry “gaming” tweaks and power plans downloaded from forums: on modern hardware these are placebo or outright risky. Spend your time on XMP/EXPO, drivers and VRR, which actually change things.
