Windows updates can drop gaming performance in non-obvious ways: reinstalling a generic driver, re-enabling VBS, or resetting the power plan. This guide explains how to confirm the update is the cause, how to fix it, and how to prevent it from happening again.

01 First confirm it actually is the update
Before making any changes, verify the timeline. Open Settings → Windows Update → Update history and note when the update installed. Then think about when you first noticed the FPS drop. If the timing matches, the update is a candidate. But also check whether you updated your GPU driver at the same time — Windows Update sometimes installs a GPU driver automatically alongside the system update, and a bad driver is a more common cause of FPS regression than the OS update itself. If both happened the same day, start with a clean GPU driver reinstall — it is faster and fully reversible.
02 Known problem classes: what a Windows update can do to FPS
Windows updates have in some cases lowered gaming performance for certain configurations. The most common mechanisms reported by players and technical press include: re-enabling security features like Virtualization Based Security (VBS) or Memory Integrity (HVCI) that were turned off, adding virtualization overhead to the system; changing the state of HAGS (Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling); resetting the power plan to Balanced when it was on Best Performance; or silently installing a generic Microsoft GPU driver over the manufacturer's specific driver. 03 The quickest fix: clean GPU driver reinstall
If the update installed a different GPU driver or left the existing driver in a bad state, a clean reinstall with DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) is usually the fastest fix. The process: download DDU from wagnardsoft.com, boot into Safe Mode, run DDU to completely remove all GPU driver files, then restart and download the latest driver directly from NVIDIA or AMD's site and install it. 04 How to uninstall a single update
If the driver reinstall did not resolve the issue and you want to try reverting the system update: Settings → Windows Update → Update history → Uninstall updates. Find the update by date, select it and remove it. Windows keeps a rollback copy for a period after installation, so the reversion generally works cleanly. After the restart, test your FPS. If it came back, you have confirmed that update was the problem. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic step — at some point you will want to take the next update, which ideally will not carry the same issue.
05 Pause updates briefly — do not disable them permanently
If you want to prevent the same update from reinstalling while you diagnose, you can pause Windows updates temporarily: Settings → Windows Update → Pause updates. Choose a short period — one to two weeks is reasonable. Windows cumulative updates bundle performance fixes with security patches, so disabling them permanently leaves you with accumulating unpatched vulnerabilities over time. The honest recommendation is to pause briefly, diagnose, and resume when Microsoft releases a follow-up update or once you have stabilized your system.
06 If FPS is still low: check VBS, HAGS and the power plan
Windows updates can silently revert settings you had tuned for gaming. Check these three things. VBS (Virtualization Based Security) / Memory Integrity: Settings → Windows Security → Device Security → Core isolation — if Memory Integrity is back on and you had intentionally turned it off, it may be adding overhead. HAGS (Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling): Settings → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings — confirm it is in the state you want. Power plan: Settings → System → Power & sleep → Additional power settings — verify it has not reverted to Balanced or Power Saver. These three are frequent candidates for being silently reverted by major Windows updates.
