How to speed up Windows boot time: real fixes

Boot time has three real levers: storage hardware, Fast Startup, and what launches at login. Registry tweaks, cleaners and optimizer tools do not move the needle. This guide gives you the changes that work, in order of impact.
Step by step
01 First: measure how long boot takes right now
Before changing anything, record a baseline. Windows has two built-in ways to measure: Event Viewer (search for 'Diagnostics-Performance' and find EventID 100, which logs boot duration in milliseconds) and the Boot Time screen in recent versions of Task Manager. A simpler option: use a stopwatch from pressing the power button until the desktop responds to a click. Write that number down. Without a starting point you cannot know whether any change actually helped.
02 The biggest possible jump: switching to an SSD
If your Windows drive is still a spinning hard drive (HDD), moving to an SSD is the highest-impact change by far. A typical HDD takes 60 to 120 seconds to boot Windows. A SATA SSD cuts that to 15 to 25 seconds, and an NVMe SSD can reach 10 to 15 seconds. No registry tweak, cleaning tool or Windows setting gets anywhere close to that improvement. If you already have an SSD, the steps below are what apply to you.
03 Enable (or confirm) Fast Startup is on
Windows Fast Startup makes 'Shut down' behave like a hybrid sleep — it saves the kernel session to disk so the next boot restores it rather than initializing from scratch. This noticeably reduces the shutdown-to-desktop time. To check: Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do > turn on 'Turn on fast startup'. In Windows 11 it is usually on by default. The caveat: if you are troubleshooting a driver problem, use Restart instead of Shut down — Restart always does a full clean boot and will not hide a persistent driver issue.
04 Cut high-impact startup apps
Startup programs do not slow down the Windows loading animation itself — they slow down how long the PC takes to become responsive after you reach the desktop, that 30 to 60 second window where everything feels sluggish. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc), go to the Startup apps tab and look for items marked High impact. Disable the ones you do not need from boot. Common candidates: Discord, Spotify, webcam apps, OneDrive sync (you can start it manually instead). Do not disable hardware drivers or security tools you do not recognize.
05 Windows services: approach with care
Disabling Windows services is often suggested as a boot-speed fix. The reality: most services that run at boot are necessary or start on demand anyway. Disabling the wrong services can break important features such as Windows Update, network functions, or audio. The risk outweighs the benefit for most users. If you want to explore this, open msconfig.exe, go to the Services tab, tick 'Hide all Microsoft services' to see only third-party services — those are safer to evaluate one by one.
06 Check for pending Windows Updates
A common cause of suddenly slow boots: Windows Update downloaded a large update and is finalizing it across the next few startups. Going to Settings > Windows Update to check for pending or in-progress updates often explains an inexplicably slow boot that appeared overnight. Once the update finishes installing, boot time returns to normal. This is expected behavior, not a bug.
07 BIOS/UEFI Fast Boot also helps
Separate from Windows Fast Startup, many motherboards have a Fast Boot option in UEFI/BIOS that reduces the POST time — the hardware verification screen before Windows starts. If POST takes several seconds, enabling Fast Boot in BIOS can save an extra 2 to 5 seconds. The caveat: with BIOS Fast Boot enabled, accessing BIOS on the next startup can be harder — you may need to power off and on rather than restart to catch the BIOS prompt in time.
08 What does NOT move boot time
To be honest: disk defragmentation (does not apply to SSDs, and on HDDs it helps disk read speed marginally, not POST time); registry cleaning (the modern registry loads efficiently and is not a boot bottleneck); third-party optimization tools that promise to speed up boot with one click (in most cases they are just disabling startup apps, which you can do yourself for free). Ninety percent of boot time is controlled by three things: storage hardware, Fast Startup, and startup apps.
