How to set a GPU fan curve: MSI Afterburner and vendor tools

A custom fan curve lets you lower your GPU temperature during gaming without touching any hardware. It is safe, fully reversible, and requires no voltage or clock changes — you are only adjusting when and how fast the fans you already have spin.

01 What a fan curve is and why it matters
A fan curve is a graph that maps GPU temperature to fan speed percentage. By default manufacturers set a conservative curve that keeps fans slow and quiet until temperatures climb quite high. The problem: by the time the fans spin up hard, the GPU is already hot. With a custom curve you make the fans ramp up sooner and faster as temperature rises, keeping the GPU cooler during gaming. You are not changing voltages or clocks — only when and how fast the fans you already have spin.
02 When a custom fan curve is worth setting
A custom fan curve is worth it in a few clear cases: your GPU reaches high temperatures under load (above 83-87°C on most modern cards) and you want to bring them down; the GPU swings abruptly between silent and loud and you prefer a smoother ramp; or the GPU's 0 RPM mode (fans stopped until a certain temperature) is letting junction temperature on the memory chip run high. If your GPU runs at 70-75°C and the noise does not bother you, the default curve is fine and there is nothing to change.
03 Tools for adjusting the curve
The most universal option is MSI Afterburner, which works on NVIDIA and AMD GPUs from all manufacturers — not just MSI cards. Download it only from msi.com/Landing/afterburner, as fake versions circulate. Alternatives: ASUS GPU Tweak III (for ASUS GPUs), NVIDIA App (the new official NVIDIA software, includes basic fan control), AMD Adrenalin Software (for AMD GPUs, includes fan control). MSI Afterburner is the most battle-tested option with the widest hardware support.
04 How to set the curve in MSI Afterburner
Open MSI Afterburner and find the fan icon in the main interface. Click the Fan Curve button or enable manual control mode. A graph opens with temperature on the X axis and fan speed percentage on the Y axis — the points are draggable. A reasonable gaming starting point: 0% at 30°C, 30% at 50°C, 50% at 65°C, 80% at 80°C, 100% at 90°C. Adjust from there based on your noise tolerance. After setting the curve, apply it and test under a demanding game or a stress tool like FurMark for 10-15 minutes, watching temperatures with HWiNFO64 or Afterburner's GPU overlay.
05 The temperature vs noise tradeoff
A more aggressive curve (faster fans at lower temperatures) drops GPU temperature but increases noise. A more conservative curve is quieter but lets temperatures run higher. There is no single right answer — it depends on your case airflow, your noise tolerance, and what maximum temperature you are comfortable with. For most setups, staying under 83°C during gaming is a good target. If your GPU is thermal throttling (dropping its clock speed to cool down under load), that does require a more aggressive curve or investigating case airflow.
06 CPU fan curves live in BIOS, not Afterburner
CPU case fans are generally not controlled by Afterburner — they are configured in the motherboard's BIOS/UEFI or the board manufacturer's desktop software (ASUS Armoury Crate, MSI Center, Gigabyte AI Boost). The process is similar: go to the Q-Fan Control, SmartFan or equivalent section in BIOS, and adjust the temperature-to-speed curve for the CPU fan headers. If BIOS feels intimidating, most manufacturers expose the same control through their Windows software.
07 Making it permanent and safe
By default MSI Afterburner changes apply while the app is running. To have the curve activate automatically at startup: enable 'Start with Windows' in Afterburner settings and make sure 'Apply overclocking at system startup' is also checked. To revert to the original factory curve at any time, click the reset button (circular arrow) in Afterburner or close the app and restart — fan curve changes are completely reversible with no system-level changes.
08 What a fan curve is not
A fan curve is not the same as undervolting or overclocking. It does not change the GPU's operating frequency, voltage, or power limit — only fan speed. If your GPU is thermal throttling, the curve can help by lowering temperature. But if the fans are already at 100% and the GPU is still throttling, the bottleneck is elsewhere: case airflow, the vapor chamber thermal paste, or a cooler that is simply insufficient for that load level.

The tool itself is safe for fan curve adjustments. Overclocking and undervolting features exist in the same tool but are separate from fan control.
