01 What ExitLag does
ExitLag is a subscription network service that redirects your game traffic through its own servers to find a shorter or more stable route to the game servers. It's essentially a network route optimizer: it can reduce latency when your ISP is taking a geographically inefficient path. It operates at the network level, not the operating system level.
02 What Neon does (and doesn't do)
Neon optimizes your local Windows stack — background processes, power settings, drivers, system priorities, XMP/EXPO, Resizable BAR. It also addresses network-adjacent power issues: Wi-Fi power-save mode (which causes periodic ping spikes) and NIC Energy-Efficient Ethernet (which causes wake latency). It does NOT redirect your traffic through external servers. It is not a VPN or route optimizer. This isn't a hidden limitation: it's the honest design. Neon cannot change the physical path of your packets to game servers.
03 These are tools for different problems
If your high ping comes from an inefficient network route from your ISP — packets travelling thousands of extra kilometres unnecessarily — ExitLag attacks that problem directly and Neon cannot fix it. If your ping is reasonable but your FPS is low, there's stutter, or the system runs slowly with apps open, then the problem is local and Neon is more relevant. Many users have both problems at once.
04 When ExitLag makes sense
ExitLag is worth investigating if: you play regional servers and your ISP routes suboptimally, you have inconsistent ping or latency spikes at peak hours, or your base connection is good but the path to the server is poor. Its model is subscription-based — you pay monthly for the active routing service.
05 When Neon makes sense
Neon is more relevant if: your FPS doesn't match the hardware you have, there's stutter or micro-freezes, you want to know if your RAM is running at the speed you paid for (XMP/EXPO), or you want system tweaks that are reversible with one click and backed by real measurement on your PC. It's a one-time purchase, not a subscription.
06 The honest overlap: the Windows network stack
There's a real zone of overlap: Windows network power settings (Wi-Fi adapter power-save mode, NIC Energy-Efficient Ethernet). Neon adjusts these locally; ExitLag adjusts them and also redirects traffic through its servers. The impact of the overlap is generally smaller than the difference in core function.
07 The real levers for ping
For network latency: physics comes first (the real distance in kilometres between you and the server always wins), then your ISP's routing choices, then local connection quality (ethernet cable beats Wi-Fi for consistency and jitter), and then local stack settings. The order matters because it tells you where the biggest gains are available.
