For most gamers, setting a game to High priority barely changes anything — Windows already prioritizes the foreground app. Gains are rare and small. NEVER use Realtime priority — it can starve input and audio of CPU time, freezing the PC. Closing background load pays far more.
What actually improves gaming performance more than CPU priority?
01 What priority and affinity do
Priority tells Windows which process wins CPU time under contention. Affinity pins a process to specific cores. They're real system knobs — but they don't create CPU power you don't have.
02 The honest verdict
For most gamers, setting the game to 'High' priority barely changes anything: Windows already gives the foreground app good priority. Real gains are rare and small. Any tool selling this as a big FPS jump is overstating it.
03 When it can help a little
In specific cases: heavy background load you can't close, or one app hogging a core. Even then, closing the offender usually works better than fighting with priorities.
04 How to test it (temporary)
Open Task Manager → Details → right-click the game's process → Set priority or Set affinity. Note: it resets when the game closes. Making it permanent takes care, and we don't recommend it lightly.
05 Why 'Realtime' is a bad idea
Never use the 'Realtime' priority: it can starve system processes (input, audio, network) of CPU and freeze the PC. 'High' is already as far up as makes sense, and it's rarely needed.
